Stephen John Schultz, 81, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025 in Carlsbad, CA. He was born in Big Spring, TX on December 28, 1943. He was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Steve graduated from Coral Gables High School in Florida where he was a talented student athlete who won numerous swimming championships. He received a swimming scholarship to Florida State University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After undergraduate school, Steve entered law school at Florida State and became a member of the 1969 first graduating class of Florida State University Law School.
He loved the study and practice of the law. He practiced labor and employment law for 50 years. He was a member of the Bar Associations of Florida, California and Colorado. One of the many highlights of his career was appearing before the United States Supreme Court with his law partner, Mike Merrill.
Steve was a collector of model trains and vintage Porsche automobiles which he kept fine-tuned and showed at local events.
Steve is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna and his son James (Brigid) and his grandsons Nolan and Wendell; his brother, Tom (Denise) and his niece Kristin Pyburn (Greg) and their sons Reid and Harrison (Margaret), nephew Stephen (Emily) and their sons Cooper and William; cousin Christine Bass; and extended family Mitch and Derek Jacoby; and Kendra Dorton, Jamie Young and Amy Bumgarner. He is predeceased by his cherished son Thomas James and his parents Lorraine and Gaylord Schultz.
Steve’s family will honor his wishes to not remember him by sending flowers or having a funeral or celebration of life. The family welcomes you to join with them in remembering him with a smile.
