Richard Allan Sherwood, 87, of Encinitas, California, passed away on April 28, 2025, at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. He was born on February 25, 1938, to Robert and Evelyn Sherwood in Detroit, Michigan.
After graduating with a B.S. from University of Michigan, he served in the Army as a member of the 113th Army Band at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Following his discharge, he completed an M.S. at University of Michigan in Library Science. He began work at University of Illinois Chicago during its’ Inaugural Year as Librarian/Faculty. His years in Chicago included crewing on a sailboat, on Lake Michigan. He loved the water and enjoyed being around it.
He next worked in Detroit, Michigan at Gale Research, a reference book publishing company. These years gave him more time with family and friends, which he loved. Even singing in a Madrigal Choir, for a time.
In 1976, he drove out to California to start his next chapter. After graduating from West Coast University with an MBA, he worked for ARCO for many years as a Senior Document Analyst and Major Litigation Support. He cherished the many friends he made while living in California.
He was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend. He had a passion for classical music and loved reading. He was very interesting and knowledgeable person and read multiple newspapers every day. His spirit will live in our hearts forever.
Richard was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sisters, Carolyn A. Carter(Duane), and Joyce S. Schaub (Gary), two nieces Michele Anstey (Bill), and Carrie Kellogg (Mark), and one nephew Rob Carter (Ashley), and many great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the care team at Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas for their compassion and support during Richard’s final days.
A Celebration of Richard’s life will be held this Summer in Michigan.
