Michael Anthony Franceschiello, a New York native who brought his sharp wit and easy laugh to San Diego, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025. He was 88.
Born in New York City in 1937, Mike joined the U.S. Army at 18. After his discharge, he worked various jobs including driving an oil truck by day and bartending at night. In 1959 he met and married Lucille, the love of his life. After welcoming their daughter, they soon settled on Long Island to raise their family.
In 1971 the family loaded up the car and moved to San Diego. For half a century, Mike worked as a bartender at many of the city’s favorite neighborhood spots including Diego’s, The Barefoot Bar, MacGregor's, Dobson's and Good Time Charlie's, pouring drinks with his warm smile, quick wit, and a story you’d never heard before but somehow needed right then.
An avid golfer for most of his life, only declining health finally forced him to set the clubs aside, a day his golf buddies will never forget.
Mike was known for his sharp sense of humor and quick one-liners that could put a smile on anyone’s face. He had an easy laugh and a warm, welcoming way about him. A devoted father and grandfather, he treasured time with his family and found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
Mike was married for 66 years to the love of his life, Lucille, who passed away six weeks after him on October 28, 2025. He is survived by his daughter Lucy and her husband Al; his beloved granddaughter Jenna; several special nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Mike was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and George, who together shaped the early chapters of his life.
A celebration of life will be held on January 18, 2026, time and location to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, share a laugh, tell a story, raise a glass—any of which would make Mike smile. The bar in heaven just got a lot livelier.
