Mavis Beatrice Duffus

Mavis Beatrice Duffus (Surname: Sturridge) aka Peggy was born to Elva Joseph and Levi Sturridge , on Mach 2, 1943 in Mandeville, Jamaica West Indies. At an early age, Mavis being the eldest daughter of Levi and the premature death of her mother, learned the value of hard work, good education, and faith in the Lord, are ingredients to a solid foundation in life. Mavis was very family orientated. She went to school full time and worked two jobs to support her family. On May 16, 1969, Mavis joined in union with Lloyd Duffus. She was very dedicated to the care of others, and pursued nursing while in Jamaica. Having the ambition and determination to do more, she journeyed to the United States where she attended Bronx Community College and became a registered nurse. Passionate about caring for others, and her dedication to her profession, she was able to obtain her license to practice nursing in three (3) states. New York, Florida and California. In1978, Mavis relocated to Los Angeles California and in September 1979, Mavis and Lloyd welcomed their daughter Cheryl. Mavis continued to raise and care for her family while working full time. In her spare time, she loved to care for animals, work in her garden, host great parties in her home and played the One--Armed Bandit. Despite the dissolution of the union, Mavis not only continued to work to support self and child, but her family in Jamaica. Mavis worked at several hospitals such as Doctor's, Daniel Freeman, California Hospital but in 1983 she began her career as a registered nurse at Hollywood Presbyterian. It was there where she focused on critical care nursing and was able to help such notables as Billy Richards of the Commodores, and the Father of Johnny L. Cochran Jr. and so many others. Unfortunately, in the year 2000, Mavis suffered a massive stroke that left her unable to walk, talk and write for a month. Being the feisty person that she was, she pushed through and was able to gain those abilities back through therapy and determination. Mavis missed nursing but was able to enjoy retirement, while still caring for others, and her pets. She loved caring for her garden, watching her TV shows such as Joel Osteen and MSNBC and her Lakers and Clippers and taking trips with her daughter to the casino and most of all. On October 4, 2017, Peggy was called home to be with her Lord and Savior and her parents.

Her daughter Cheryl survives her. She is also survived by her siblings;
Sisters: Joyce Francis, Dorcas Sturridge, Ruth Sturridge, Lavern Sturridge, Debbie Sturridge. Brothers: Albert Sturridge, Paul Sturridge, Orette Sturridge, Toney Sturridge, John Sturridge, Everton Sturridge. A plethora of nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; cousins and friends and the whole-leap-a'dem! Not to mention her favorite Dog Baby: Buddy

Thank you to the family of Joyce Francis, Daniel and Sherette Duffus, Jeff and Judy Schieberl, William and Lillian Hopson and Theoples Clinton and thank you to the countless extended family and friends for your love and support during this time.
