March 10, 1957 – March 21, 2026
Mary Laura Bates passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, in Carlsbad, California, after a brave and brief battle with cancer. She spent her final days at Pacifica House Hospice, surrounded by care, comfort, and the unwavering presence of her dear friends Brenda and Cecilia.
Born in Bremerton, Washington, Mary lived a life defined by service, kindness, and connection. She served four years in the United States Army as a Personnel Management Specialist before beginning a long and dedicated career at the Vista Superior Courthouse. After 30 years as a court clerk, she retired in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and professionalism.
Mary made her home in Carlsbad for many years, where her circle of friends became her chosen family. She had a gift for staying connected. She checked in, showed up, and truly cared. She loved going out to dinner with friends, sharing stories, and making sure the people in her life felt seen and supported.
She had a soft heart for animals, especially cats and dogs, and volunteered her time at Petco to be near them. She loved books and spent many happy hours at the library, building a collection that reflected her curiosity and love of learning. She also enjoyed puzzles, crochet, and searching for small treasures in local hospice shops. A good glass of wine and meaningful conversation were among her favorite simple pleasures. She found joy in her favorite comforts, including Elvis, The Golden Girls, Lucille Ball, and Harry Potter, which brought her happiness, familiarity, and laughter throughout her life.
Mary will be laid to rest with full military honors at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, near her parents.
In her memory, donations may be made to Pacifica House Hospice in Carlsbad. The best way to honor Mary is simple. Share a meal with friends. Raise a glass. Check on someone you care about. And always choose kindness.
