It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lillian Jones Darensburg on December 10, 2024. A remarkable woman, Lillian leaves behind a cherished legacy as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend, and compassionate social worker. Her life stands as an inspiring testament to love, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to her children, Shelton and Alma, whom she raised single-handedly, ensuring they thrived in an environment that fostered their education and happiness.
Born on January 16, 1935, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Lillian was the beloved daughter of Shelton Essex Jones and Lillian Bessie Robeaux. She grew up on their family farm by the Cane River alongside her two sisters, Doris and Catherine, who affectionately nicknamed her “Lickie”. It was there, amidst the beauty of the Southern landscape, that Lillian first grasped the profound importance of education paired with hard work.
Her academic journey took her from the serenity of Louisiana to the bustling streets of Chicago, where she completed her secondary education while living with her sister Catherine and brother-in-law Joseph. Lillian returned to her beloved state to attend Dillard University, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She furthered her studies at the University of Utah, earning a Master of Science degree in 1959. Lillian then ventured to Los Angeles, California, where she married Logan James Darensburg and welcomed her two cherished children into the world.
Upon moving to Carson City, Nevada, after her divorce, Lillian committed herself fully to her roles as a mother and social worker for the State of Nevada. She tirelessly worked to create a safe, nurturing environment for her children, instilling in them the values that guided her own life. Whether it was fostering their involvement in sports or extracurricular activities, Lillian’s selflessness and dedication knew no bounds. She was a constant presence in their lives, devoting countless weekends to supporting them at events—even if it meant long drives and overnight stays.
Beyond her devotion to her family, Lillian cultivated a rich social life filled with meaningful connections. Her love for games like bridge and dominos, combined with her passion for travel and volunteering at local schools, enriched her spirit. Lillian reveled in exploring new ideas, engaging in deep conversations, and valuing diverse perspectives. She was a patient listener, always ready to provide comfort and encouragement to those in need.
In lieu of a funeral service, family and friends are invited to a Repass celebration of Lillian's life at the residences of Shelton and Oletha Darensburg in Carlsbad, California, in late February. This gathering will provide an opportunity to reminisce and share fond memories. Additional details will be provided to all who wish to honor her memory.
Lillian has been reunited in eternal rest with her beloved family members who predeceased her, including her parents, Shelton and Bessie Jones; her sisters, Doris Lewis and Catherine DuPree; and her former spouse, Logan Darensburg.
She will be profoundly missed by her children and their families: Shelton, his wife Oletha, and their children Seth and Sydney; Alma, her husband Randal, and their children Taylor and Logan. Lillian’s memory will also be cherished by her nephew and nieces, including Patracia DuPree, along with other relatives, including Cameron Jarret and Beverly Hicks, and dear friends like Linda Meacham.
True to her giving spirit, Lillian chose to donate her body to the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, contributing to educational and scientific advancements that will benefit future generations of African Americans in medicine.
We invite all who knew Lillian to share their stories and fond memories on the tribute wall, celebrating a life beautifully lived.
