Edith Isabel Luoma

In Loving Memory of Edith Luoma September 16, 1937 – March 29, 2025

With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Edith Luoma on March 29, 2025. Born in Edmonton, Alberta on September 16, 1937, Edie lived a rich, adventurous, and deeply meaningful life that touched the hearts of all who knew her. The third of four children (Jack, Alice and Bob) to parents Joseph and Margaret Neal, Edie grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, post-depression, before the family moved to Edmonton. The Neals had very little money and their first house on a farm had no indoor plumbing. Maybe this is why Edie was always so grateful and generous.

After graduating high school, Edie and her best friends from elementary school followed their dreams of exploration and independence—moving from Edmonton to Vancouver, then on to San Francisco and eventually Honolulu. That adventurous spirit would remain a hallmark of her life.

After living in Hawaii, she returned to San Francisco where she had met Lloyd Luoma and they were married in Edmonton in 1960. They settled in Sunnyvale, California and raised 3 children: Bill, Lindsey and Kim.

Edie built a long and successful career at Lockheed Martin, where she worked for over 20 years. She had an Associate’s Degree but went back to school to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at the University of San Francisco in 1986.

She had a sharp mind and a love for challenges—whether it was investing in the stock market and real estate, playing bridge, tackling a tough Sudoku puzzle, or answering every clue on Wheel of Fortune.

Like many Canadians (and even though she became a US citizen in 1965, she remained Canadian in heart and spirit) Edie loved to travel, visiting Europe many times and enjoyed cruises with her brother Bob and his wife Sheila. A cruise to Bermuda in 2013 with 25 family members for a niece’s wedding was a highlight.

In 2000, she moved to Carlsbad, California, where her daughter Kim and husband Dave were starting their family and she played an important and loving role in raising her grandchildren, Jacob and Kaitlyn. She found both community and spiritual home as a devoted member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Her faith, her kindness, her smile and her love of life were constant sources of strength and joy to those around her.

Edie was a loving and devoted mother to Bill, Lindsey, and Kim; and an adoring and proud grandmother to Alexandra, Harrison, Jacob, Kaitlyn, and Sasha. Her family was her greatest joy, and her legacy will live on through the values she instilled, the laughter she inspired, and the love she gave so freely.

Rest peacefully, Edie. You were a gift to us all.
