A California native, David L. Moye was born in Compton. He lived in Carlsbad as a young man and spent the last 43 years of his life in Cardiff by the Sea with his wife, Kathleen. He was just shy of his 80th birthday.
David would have been considered a Renaissance man. He was so very talented, yet humble, and he was kind, gentle, and patient. He loved music and had a repertoire of several hundred songs, playing one of his guitars, banjo, or ukulele. He even made several instruments, and his inlay work was beautiful. Listening to him sing was a joy. His stained glass, metal sculptures, and soapstone carvings all exhibited a rare talent. He could build you a house from the ground up and do all the plumbing and electrical. If he needed a tool that didn’t exist, he would make it. And he loved to learn – reading, researching, and attending classes. Wood was probably his favorite medium – he loved it so much, he said he wanted to come back as a termite!
Aside from music and the arts, he loved dogs most of all and respected Nature. He spent much time hiking and camping in the mountains and Borrego Desert – catching his own fish, cooking it up in his campfire, gazing up at the stars. He was never bored.
David is survived by his wife, Kathleen Brooks, of Cardiff by the Sea, CA, daughter, Danae Moye, of Claremore, Oklahoma, sisters Nancy Cook of Eugene, OR, and Ruth (Harry) Bishop of Santee, CA, and countless nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jesse and Bessie (Vana) Moye, and his brothers Jack Moye and Lee Frampton-Moye.
Those of us who knew him loved him. He is greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at his home in Cardiff by the Sea in the Fall.
